From coast to country, Cornwall has it all, especially when it comes to walks. Every year, locals and tourists alike flock to the best walking spots in the county to take in sweeping sea views, rolling countryside landscapes, and woodland wonders. But, of course, when talking about the best walks in Cornwall, we can’t fail to mention all the amazing South West Coast Path walks in Cornwall. 

South West Coast Path Passport

Following the launch of the SWCP Passport, we have teamed up with the South West Coast Path Association and joined over 100 Way Makers as a welcome place to get your SWCP passport officially stamped along the trail, helping create a lasting memory of your time on the path.

The UK’s longest and best-loved National Trail, walking the 630-mile route along the coast of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset doesn’t have to be done all in one go and most complete it in bit-size sections. There are lots of places to stay, rest, eat and drink within easy reach of the Coast Path, including our own hotel, which is dog-friendly too, and perfect for you and your walking companion to rest and refresh. What’s more, planning your trip along the trail outside of the hot summer period may be smart thinking. Choosing the Autumn or Spring months avoids the holiday crowds, and makes for comfortable walking conditions too.

But first, what is the South West Coast Path?

If you don’t know, you’re in for a real treat. The South West Coast Path is a 630-mile long-distance footpath in England. It stretches from Minehead in Somerset, along the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, to South Haven Point in Poole Harbour, Dorset.

Many experienced walkers challenge themselves to walk the entirety of the coast path, however, coming in at about 7-8 weeks to complete on foot, it’s no wonder many people choose to break down the path into manageable chunks. But when faced with a 630-mile coast path, where do you start?

 Remember, lots of these paths offer amazing cliff-top views. Always leave a good distance between yourself and the cliff edge and never venture down a path that is closed or looks unsafe.

Polperro to Looe

This scenic South West Coast Path route takes you from Polperro to Looe, and offers breathtaking views of the Cornish coastline. There are rockpools on the beaches, remnants of shipwrecks, tales of smugglers and the walk ends with a stroll up through the picturesque fishing village of Polperro to Crumplehorn, where you can catch a bus back to Looe (or walk back for an extended day out).

Coming in at just over 5 miles one-way, this is a great walk to tackle in half a day. 

The Lizard Point Walk

This circular walk is around 8.5 miles long and takes you along the southernmost point of mainland Britain. Take in dramatic views of the Atlantic, visit the lighthouse and look out for local wildlife.

While there are a few different places to start this walk, one of the more popular places is at the National Trust car park next to the Lizard Lighthouse. From there you can start your walk by following the path down towards Lizard Point.

The trail is completely dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can experience the freedom of walking the South West Coast Path along with you.

The Tintagel to Boscastle Walk

This walk is just over 7 miles long and takes you along some of the most stunning cliff-top routes of the South West Coast Path in Cornwall. Combining an easy route with dramatic views and rich history, this coastal walk is ideal for walkers with a range of abilities.

With Tintagel known for its history and legends and Boscastle home to the famous Witchcraft museum, this South West Coast Path walk in Cornwall is a treat from start to finish.

The Land’s End to St Ives Walk

Looking for a challenge? Or perhaps a walk to span two days? The coastal walk from Cornwall’s iconic Land’s End to the popular seaside town of St Ives takes on average 8 hours to complete, or longer if you plan to stop along the way to soak in the path’s fantastic views (which we’re sure you’ll not want to miss).

As well as sandy beaches and endless sea views, there are plenty of cafes and small towns to divert to along your route. For day hikers, or those looking for a gentle stroll, this walk as a whole may be too long. But that’s the great thing about the South West Coast Path, you can do as much or as little as you, please!

Porthcurno to Penzance Walk

This 11-mile South West Coast Path route takes you along the stunning coastline from Porthcurno to Penzance and includes a visit to the iconic Minack Theatre. The walk will take about 2 hours and offers some of the best coastal views in Cornwall.

In Summer, why not bring your swimming gear for a much needed cool off on Porthcurno Beach after your walk? Or perhaps grab some of Penzance’s famous seafood once you arrive at this historic fishing town. As well as your start and finish points, there are plenty of things to see along the way, including sandy beaches and rare wildlife!
